We often take the simple pleasures of life for granted. Seeing your children or grandchildren, the sunrise or the necessity of driving, that is until they are lost.

The Gift

The glistening sheen of great pride
Agleam in a new parent’s eye
Purple mountains afar
Twinkling stars in the sky
These everyday sights that we see

Spider webs enhanced by the dew
Like jewels in the first morning sun
Laughing children at play
Tag you’re it What great fun
These visions that bring us such glee

Visions we just take for granted
Like rainbows to end rainy days
Sunsets and sunrises
Sails aloft in the bay
Common sights that give such a lift

Wild geese flying south in a V
Silhouettes in a twilight sky
Autumn leaves on the breeze
Sights enjoyed with a sigh
To see What a wonderful gift

Helen Keller Day
In 1971, the Board of Directors of Lions Clubs International declared that henceforth June 1 would be remembered as “Helen Keller Day.” Lions around the world implemented sight-related service projects on Helen Keller Day.

Lions World Sight Day
Lions World Sight Day, which was created to recognize and reinforce the importance of eradicating preventable blindness, is held annually on the second Thursday of October. Lions clubs around the world participate by sponsoring local activities and programs, either on Lions World Sight Day or some time during October, to educate their communities about the need to conquer preventable blindness and preserve sight.
